The Federalist Papers

   Posted by: admin   in Uncategorized

In case you have been either living in a cave your entire life, or are a result of our current public educational system, there was a series of 85 letters written by John Jay, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton, and were a discussion of how our ‘federal’ and state governments should be structured, and their relationships, the protections they would give or not, etc. A better description and history can be found on Wikipedia here.

John Jay eventually became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. James Madison became the Fourth President of the United States. Alexander Hamilton became the first Secretary of the Treasury. He was also the author of most of the Federalist Papers.

From the Library of Congress, the papers are described as:

Much of the structure of our existing government is based on the concepts discussed in these letters. It would be very wise to understand these.

These docs are posted on the Library of Congress website. I have posted the index link here.  They can also be found here, in plain text at Project Gutenberg.

I was told recently to read and understand letters #10 and #51.
